What is Chair yoga ?
When I ask people to come to ‘Chair Yoga’ people often think I mean using the chair as some kind of apparatus in the practice… I suppose they are kind of correct, as people do sit on the chair, or lean on it… No need to bring a chair either… we have plenty of chairs!
Chair yoga is a creative way to make yoga accessible to individuals who would not normally be able to participate. For example, those who are suffering with disabilities, arthritis, recovering from surgery or illness, weight challenges.
It is also an excellent way to exercise for senior’s in our communities, or busy people who can't find time for the gym, or indeed anyone who would find it difficult to get down on the floor or mat.
Inspite of practising yoga seated on a chair or using a chair for support one can still reap all the benefits yoga has to offer. To name a few benefits, it improves circulation, strengthens muscles, increases flexibility, lubricates joints, improves range of motion and mobility, improves balance, eliminates toxins, calms the mind and improves concentration.
Even better news is that you do not need a special chair for this, any sturdy chair at home can be used for this type of practice. I have been offering chair yoga sessions for 3 months now and already have a growing group of regulars who attend. They all have benefited one way or another, and below are some comments a few of them have shared with me :-
One says she is so happy because she’s improved her range of movement and can now reach to the top shelf of her cupboard, she has improved balance and feels calmer. She also says that she feels terribly disappointed if she misses the session.
Another of the students says he feels very relaxed and enjoys this gentle pace versus the Vinyasa yoga he did years ago.
Another student who was a regular yogi had stopped practicing due to a chronic illness for almost ten years. On attending the class, she says it is almost esoteric, she feels like she’s had a rebirth and enjoys her improved range of movement.
A little about my passion…
I am a yoga teacher with 200 hr Teacher training certificate from a Registered Yoga School, who is passionate about sharing the multiple benefits of yoga and making it accessible to everyone.
I have been practising yoga for years now and it has become a true friend to me. I now make measured responses rather than react in difficult situations. I have retained my spontaneity but without being impulsive and on the mat often find solace in times of distress and sadness.
