Yoga beyond the physical benefits – A Spiritual Practice

I have been practising Yoga regularly for the last 6 years and have come to realise that if you step on the mat with an intention and sincerity and hold on to this intention outside of the yoga practice, life begins to unfold and open up on different spheres.

For your practice to help you on your spiritual journey you need to be committed to the practice and become a regular practitioner and as I did that I have seen the changes it has brought about and progressed my spiritual journey.

What is being spiritual?

According to me being spiritual implies being in the present moment by letting go of the regrets from the past and to stop worrying/ being anxious about the future. To enjoy the present moment, being happy, joyous, peaceful, and becoming a kinder and more compassionate individual. Responding to situations rather than reacting. Observing repetitive situations and changing the way you go about things to bring a different result. This has been brought about by different aspects of the practice.

By being present on the mat by connecting with my breath throughout the practice I have transferred it into my life by learning to be present in the moment. The mind always has the tendency to oscillate in the past or future but this tool of being able to connect to my breath has been very useful.

Each time I connect to my breath I am overwhelmed with gratitude for each breath.

Learning to breathe through difficult poses and hold them I am better able to handle difficult situations by breathing through them.

As my physical flexibility has improved I have become more flexible in life by viewing situations from another persons perspective.

I have learned to be kinder towards myself by not pushing to get into those difficult poses and accepting my current limitations. This has also helped me to be compassionate with others who are in these situations.

I have developed more patience and persistence as I struggled to get into difficult poses. I have also learned to stretch my limits and not give up. At the same time l have learned to stretch to the extent I can and let go of the comparison or the way it’s supposed to be.

Besides all this I have become more self-aware and the inner strength, balance and flexibility that I have developed on the mat has transferred off the mat in life situations too.
I am more happier, calmer and peaceful person by being in the present moment , most of the time.
